Nuno’s two wingbacks
Matthew Doherty
Matthew Doherty did not enjoy a successful first year at Tottenham Hotspur. However, the Irishman was outstanding in a more advanced wingback role during his last season under Nuno’s leadership at Wolves.
He deserves another chance to prove that he is good enough to start on the right side of Spurs’ midfield.
Sergio Reguilón
The Spaniard’s selection on the left side is guaranteed. He is the perfect embodiment of a modern wingback. Reguilon excels in a more advanced role, allowing him the freedom to bomb forward and provide service into the box. He is also blessed with the skill to take on defenders, which alleviates pressure on Spurs’ backline.
Davies and Reguilon are both equipped with the experience to play at either left wingback or as part of a central back three. They can interchange when needed. Though Reguilon is far superior going forward than he is as an out-and-out defender, so Davies will want to refrain from pushing too far up field.
