Ndombele was in the French squad until he was not

Tanguy Ndombele was one of the bright spots at times for Tottenham last season. Going from a player struggling to play a half to one who was disappointed to come off with 10 minutes to go, Ndombele found a motor.

No one is going to mistake Ndombele’s motor for that of Moussa Sissoko – his French midfield counterpart who did make the squad – however, no one is going to mistake Sissoko’s skills for that of Ndombele.

No one seems to ever question the ability of  Ndombele, but it is keeping that motor running and playing a complete box-to-box game that still eludes the Frenchman. However, even with some questions remaining about the midfielder’s game, had Jose Mourinho persisted at Tottenham he would have likely made the squad.

I say that because Ndombele did not play significant minutes under Ryan Mason and clearly that time on the pine cost him his spot. Just as missing out on the French World Cup Champion team in 2018 seemed to light something in Sissoko, maybe this snub lights the fire that needs to burn hotter and brighter for Ndombele.

Tottenham takeaway

Maybe none of the three that were snubbed will see being left out as an opportunity to improve. Then again, they might, which could yield better performances from all three players next season.

Ultimately it is up to the players to prove their respective coaches wrong. Let’s hope these three players got the message.
