Tottenham, Eric Dier

Eric Dier is not done yet

Eric Dier is a player who most folks seem to be down on over the last couple of seasons. Not physical or consistent enough to be a great defender and simply not athletic enough to be a reliable midfielder, Dier is a tweener. But Dier is also a leader.

Leadership is certainly something England needs and when you see players like Kieran Trippier playing out of position, it is because of his leadership more than anything. Dier was able to keep his place in the Three Lions for much of the season and was a surprise omission for many when the initial preliminary roster was announced. Not for others, though.

With John Stones, Tyrone Mings, and Harry Maguire in the team there is not a ton of room for Dier, but that does not mean he cannot play his way back into the team. Had the team been selected last summer as originally scheduled, it’s likely Dier would have been in and Stones out.

With a new manager coming in and likely one that needs a ball-playing center back, Dier likely still has a role at Tottenham and it is a role he can parlay back into the Three Lions if he can regain his confidence and consistency. Speaking of confidence and consistency that is something that this second snub needs also needs to regain.
