Tottenham midfield ratings

Ryan Mason decided to leave both Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani LoCelso out of the line-up meaning it was up to Harry Winks and Dele Alli to partner with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in the Tottenham midfield.

Dele Alli – 6

Some days Dele Alli tries things and they just come off and other days they do not. Sunday was one of the do not come off days for Dele Alli. It was Dele who turned the ball over just five minutes into the match to hand possession to Leicester and bring them into the game. Too often Dele tries the flick or the sublime and it just does not happen. He is missing a creative force next to him to help make all the trickery work. Whether that ever happens again at Tottenham Hotspur, remains to be seen.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – 7

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg did a bit of everything – as usual – for Tottenham against Leicester. The Dane had a couple of tackles, passed pretty well, and worked hard to recover the ball. He was passed a few times on the dribble as he sometimes struggles with angles and comes in a bit out of control. Deciding if Højbjerg is truly the answer in the deep midfield is job #1 for the new staff.

Harry Winks – 6.5

Harry Winks did okay with some of the little things against Leicester, winning three tackles, making a couple of dribbles, and even winning a header. However, those little things are not the reason Harry Winks is on the pitch, rather Winks is on the pitch to pass the ball. As we have seen repeatedly this season, under pressure Winks is not the tidy passer he is when teams sit back. Completing only 73% of more than 60 passes, Winks really struggled to move the ball. This was particularly true of the forward passes but at least he was trying some.
