Analytics favour Tottenham’s Kane in battle with Salah for Golden Boot
By Gary Pearson
The analytics, however, favour Kane
Kane still has the analytics on his side, though. Statistically, Tottenham’s talisman is superior on all fronts. Kane has more shots per 90 minutes, a higher expected goals tally and expected goals per 90 minutes.
Kane has scored 22 goals in 33 appearances (0.66 xG90), while Salah has bagged his 22 goals in 35 outings (.58 xG90).
Kane also has bundles more assists. Leading the league with 13 assists, Kane has nine more than Salah. That stat might seem slightly inconsequential when projecting the Golden Boot winner, but it carries weight.
If Kane is more selfish in the final two games, he’ll have more opportunity of winning the Golden Boot. Easier said than done. Kane has a plethora of attacking options to choose from, including a resurgent Dele Alli, Sonny and Gareth, the latter two are Spurs’ second and third leading goal scorers.
So if Kane’s space is snuffed out by Leicester and Villa, expect the selfless Englishman to pick out one of his conversant colleagues. Salah is inarguably more selfish in front of goal, especially this season, leading one to believe he might just pip Kane to the individual accolade.
But Kane has a knack for scoring big goals and, based on the analytics, should be considered the slightest of favourites to pick up his third Golden Boot and first since 2016/17.
