Jose Mourinho signing with Roma benefits Tottenham Hotspur
By Gary Pearson
Less than three weeks after getting the boot at Tottenham, Jose Mourinho has signed a three-year deal with Roma that will benefit his former club financially.
Tottenham are contracted to pay Jose gardening leave up to a period of 18 months after his departure from the club. But because of his appointment at Roma, Spurs will now be forced only to pay his contractually agreed monthly earnings for a few months, until his new post starts in the summer.
Jose’s contract with Spurs is estimated at around £10.5 million per year, so a few months pay will still cost the club almost £2 million. There are other severance costs Spurs will have to pay Jose, but it won’t come close to the £30 million payout Daniel Levy was preparing for.
Hopefully the savings on Mourinho’s severance will allow Tottenham to make a more lucrative package for the incoming manager. Or they could potentially use the extra money in the transfer market, or perhaps siphon it to the Gareth Bale kitty, ensuring the Welshman’s loan is extended until the end of next campaign.
Jose originally said he wouldn’t return to football until the time was right. But we all know that Jose’s ego cannot be suppressed. He was probably dumbfounded by Roma’s appealing offer, especially as it came in the immediate aftermath of his failed project in north London.
Regardless of his reasons, the move benefits Tottenham’s strained pocketbook, which, in an otherwise gloomy season, is a welcome bit of good news.
