What it’s like being a Tottenham Hotspur supporter
By Gary Pearson
Even through intolerable pain, forever a Lilywhite
Through immeasurable suffering and pain, we will always love our beloved Lilywhites. The pain from yesterday’s loss — along with other similar defeats — dissipates over time. And while we’ll never forget losing these monumental matches, we can harness the experiences, using them when Spurs eventually end what will now be a 14-year barren trophy-less patch.
For when Spurs do finally win a trophy, suffering through years of heartbreak, pain and suffering will make the glory all the more rewarding. We can look at each other in the eyes, knowing everything we’ve experienced led us to a glorious moment that will forever remain etched in time, whenever that may be. I just hope it occurs before I can no longer hold my bladder after a few pints.
Because Tottenham supporters are nothing if not loyal. It’s not as if we’re glory hunters. Unlike some other sides, whose supporters follow them purely for the inevitable trophies their team will invariably lift, Tottenham fans are genuine, their support unerringly unwavering.
We know tumult and adversity comes well before, and ridiculously more often, than glory. And while we know glory is somewhere on the horizon, we can’t pinpoint exactly where.
That doesn’t prevent us from getting excited every time our beloved team walks out onto the pitch, whether on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or the weekend. The day of the week doesn’t determine our enthusiasm and commitment to the cause.
We’ll forever be Tottenham Hotspur supporters, long after Daniel Levy steps down from his high horse.
At least we can take solace in that, right?
Because who knows when we’ll next have a chance to put this 14-year drought to bed, once and for all.
In the end, it’s a drug I know I’ll forever be addicted to.
For now I’ll hold on to the memories of being at Wembley in 2008, the last time Tottenham won a trophy. The memories might be faint, but I still vaguely recall what glory tastes like.
