On Wednesday evening at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Spurs took the field for the first time under interim manager Ryan Mason. Neither the line-up nor the players were all that different than seen at times under former coach Jose Mourinho. However, the overall performance, particularly over the last 40 minutes gives Tottenham fans reason to hope. Here are our player ratings from the Mason debut.

Tottenham’s Captain Stepped-up Big

Hugo Lloris is not always the most vocal leader on the pitch and as a goalkeeper, it can be hard for him to truly be the on-field leader. However, on Wednesday Hugo Lloris let his work on the pitch do the leading.

Within the first two minutes of the match, Lloris came up with a magnificent double save, which kept Tottenham from a very early deficit, which could have turned the outcome of the game. Instead, Lloris made an excellent save on an early header – off a free kick of course – from Mohammed Salisu.

Then as Lloris was scurrying to get off the ground having parried the initial header, the Frenchman pulled his knee up just enough to block the follow-up volley from Che Adams. Adams had struck the ball magnificently well off but fortunately, close enough to Lloris for Hugo to make the save.

Hugo Lloris only had two more saves the rest of the day but without those first two, who knows how the day might have gone. Instead, when the team needed someone to step up on the pitch, Hugo Lloris did it big time.

Besides Lloris’ solid outing, read on for the full player ratings.
