Rating the Tottenham Defense

The Tottenham defense continues to have problems, many of which are of their own design. Poor passing in the back and bad giveaways continue to plague the team. Part of it is the hide-and-seek play of the midfield and then just poor play on their own parts.

Alderweireld – 6

Toby Alderweireld did okay most of the evening playing as the right back in a back three outside of Joe Rodon. He was at least trying to run with Richarlison when he and Rodon were split in the first half. A big Hugo Lloris save bailed them out. Played smart and safe most of the evening, which is something Tottenham needs.

Rodon – 6.5

Joe Rodon continues to show promise in the backline for Tottenham. Rodon was pretty good in the air and made a few nice tackles. Needs to keep his focus and maintain his cool as we want him to be different than the other current backs. A work in progress, but is progressing.

Dier – 5.5

Eric Dier was okay in the attacking half up on the left side for parts of the second half. However, Eric Dier in defense is another story. Whereas Toby Alderweireld plays smart and safe, Dier will play sloppy or take unnecessary risks and it gets him exposed. Was completely turned around on the one-two that led to Everton’s second goal. However, any midfielder running with Gilfi Sigurdsson would have stopped the goal.

Hugo Lloris – 7

Despite conceding the two goals Hugo Lloris played about as well as he has all season. The French skipper managed several big saves, a couple at point-blank range. His save in the first half on Richarlison kept the game level 0-0. His block of Joshua King around 84 minutes kept the score 2 all.
