1. Individual defensive mistakes continually cost Spurs

There were individual mishaps all over the pitch on Tyneside during Sunday’s disappointing result. But the most notable mistakes were once again committed by members of Tottenham’s shaky rearguard.

Sanchez, who endured another miserable outing, coughed up possession twice in a matter of seconds. His blunders, compounded by a misdirected Tanganga header and Pierre Hojnberg’s inability to win a 50/50 challenge, led directly to Newcastle’s opener. Those type of mistakes have become commonplace in Tottenham’s backline. Rodon, Dier and even Alderweireld have been found wanting, all of whom committing needless, inexplicable and repeated mishaps that cannot happen at this level.

Until Tottenham’s defenders eradicate completely personal hair brain blunders, Jose’s side has but a slim chance of securing a Champions League spot. If they sneak into fourth place, Jose better resolve these two defensive issues or his side will face the invariable wrath and ruthlessness of elite sides in next season’s Champions League.
