Tottenham player ratings in bitterly disappointing Newcastle draw
By Gary Pearson
Defence
Hugo Lloris 8/10
Hugo Lloris yet again saved Tottenham’s blushes. More to the point, he saved Davinson Sanchez from further embarrassment on a pivotal double save point blank save from a wide open Dwight Gayle. Newcastle’s forward’s initial header was saved instinctually by the Frenchman. Lloris then acrobatically, with some help from the post, saved Gayle’s close-range followup. Had no chance on Newcastle’s late equalizer.
Japhet Tanganga 5/10
Plays a rugged style of old school defending. While Japhet doesn’t offer much going forward, he’s strong in the tackle and is difficult to beat in one-on-one situations. The energetic right back almost provided an offensive spark in the second half, but his header was unluckily cleared off the goal line.
His otherwise sturdy performance was offset by two big mistakes. His initial giveaway eventually led to Newcastle’s first goal, while the Englishman’s second half whiff on a header attempt handed Joelinton a glorious chance to equalize, which he thankfully skewed wide.
Davinson Sanchez 2/10
Loose defending from the Colombian throughout. As we’ve come to expect, Davinson Sanchez has an absurd propensity to cough up possession in precarious areas. His unnecessary mistake, one of many in the first half, led to Newcastle’s opener. Toby Alderweireld would offer more stability, experience and sure handedness. The Colombian also played a part in Newcastle’s late equalizer, allowing far too much space.
Joe Rodon 6/10
Rodon was easily the more stable of Spurs’ central defensive pairing. However, he also endured some difficulties throughout. He made some strong last-gasp tackles but still has a lot to learn. It’s not a lot to say he’s more trustworthy than both Davinson and Eric Dier. Though Rodon lost his mark on Newcastle’s late equalizer, denting an otherwise decent performance.
Sergio Reguilon 5/10
The Spaniard offered a consistent threat down the left byline. He delivered numerous dangerous crosses, many of which coming in the second half. His decent performance was nullified when Newcastle equalized, as Reguilon was easily beaten in the air at the back post.
