2. Right Back

It is clear, after seeing Matthew Doherty maraud down the byline, that Spurs need a more accomplished right back to lift them to championship heights. The Irishman is a capable right back, a sturdy, sound defender.

But he’s not of an elite level needed to win the Premier League title. As a recent reminder, Palace allowed Doherty acres of space on the right wing, knowing he’s the Tottenham player who would cause the least damage. His skill, pace and crossing accuracy aren’t quite at the level Spurs need it to be, though he can offer a lot as a squad player.

We all know by now what Serge Aurier offers. He’s an explosive right back who shows glimmers of star quality. But his inconsistency and erratic behaviour prevent him from reaching the top level.

In a lot of ways, he’s his own worst enemy, constantly taking a step forward only to have to retreat a few more. Tottenham require a player of Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s quality. Sure, the Liverpool right back isn’t having the best campaign, but he has the ability to punish the opposition in various ways. It’s not an easy position to fill, something Tottenham have been trying to do since Kyle Walker departed for Manchester City four years ago.
