Tottenham shows newfound maturity in win over Palace
By Gary Pearson
After conceding late in the first half, Tottenham showed a newfound maturity that will serve them well in the race for a coveted Champions League spot.
Most supporters gulped collectively when Christian Benteke finished a towering header late into first half stoppage time. Spurs dominated the first half but switched off momentarily, allowing Palace to gain parity at a pivotal part of the match.
But Tottenham vanquished their demons by coming out of the tunnel full guns a blazing for the restart. They showed vigour, drive and the impetus to wipe clean what turned out to be a mere blemish. It was the kind of second half performance Tottenham supporters have patiently waited for. Of course it helps when your attacking players are as clinical as Gareth Bale and Harry Kane.
But the main takeaway from the match is how the home side reacted after what could have been decisive moment. Benteke’s goal didn’t, like previous matches this season, derail Tottenham. The away side’s goal actually had a galvanizing effect on Jose Mourinho’s side.
Spurs did not take their foot off the pedal, instead, with direct, swift high-tempo play, putting Palace to the sword. Not only did it show a newfound maturity, but it highlighted the team’s current confidence level.
Bale, Kane, Toby Alderweireld, Son Heung-min and Pierre Hojberg, among others, put their recent collective miseries behind them with a near faultless performance. With most of the squad returning to top form and only Giovanni Lo Celso on the long-term injury list, Tottenham are reaching the peak of their prowess at the most important part of the season.
Now we wait to see if the team’s recent transformation permeates all levels and degrees of competition. Arsenal and Dynamo Kiev are on tap, two teams that will surely offer Spurs a sterner test than an unmotivated Roy Hodgson side.
Though Spurs will fear no team if they continue to play like they did against Palace yesterday.
