Tottenham Defensive Ratings

Overall, Tottenham was solid defensively in the match limiting Palace’s opportunities to score. Even on the goal, while Toby Alderweireld was beaten in the air by Christian Benteke, a bit more pressure upfront would have prevented such an easy cross. Alas, Tottenham was much stronger in the second-half defensively as a team not allowing Palace back into the match.

Sergio Reguilón – 7.5

Sergio Reguilón was excellent on the left flank on both ends of the pitch. As the match went on, duties defensively became less as the Spaniard pushed forward again and again. Sergio is developing a nice partnership with Son on the left and provides a consistent outlet for Gareth Bale who likes to hit big diagonals from the right. Reguilón got the hockey assist on Spurs third as he crossed to Kane who centered back to Bale, who powered home the header. An excellent game from Sergio.

Toby Alderweireld – 7

Toby Alderweireld did more right than wrong on the day, though most will remember him getting outmuscled in the air by Christian Benteke for Palace’s tying goal late in the first half. Many players have been beaten by Benteke in the air and some better pressure might have prevented such a good cross. Outside of that moment, Toby was all over Benteke and kept him from doing much in the second half.

Davinson Sanchez – 8

Davinson Sanchez is continuing to have a renaissance of sorts over the last several matches. Sanchez was again strong in the air and had some significant tackles and blocks. The Columbian was strong in the air, winning five headers, and was impeccable in his passing, completing 82 of 85 passes for a 96% success rate. Played smart, good football.

Matt Doherty – 7.5

Matt Doherty had a good game overall, working to get up and down the pitch contributing on both ends. Doherty had a couple of big headers defensively – one to concede a corner and prevent a one-on-one – and the other which he managed to head back to Lloris. Did well at times combining with Gareth Bale. Needs to keep working on his crossing but got the easy assist on Kane’s incredible first goal.

Hugo Lloris – 7

Hugo Lloris actually did not have a save in the match but did have a couple of moments. Lloris was essentially helpless on the Benteke goal but did manage some big clearances. Hugo came twice on corners making big punches in the penalty box to take some control and leave nothing to chance. With a player like Benteke on the opposition, the fewer opportunities for him to win headers in the box the better. Was beaten a second time on a shot by Zaha that went off the post, which then ricocheted off Lloris’ chest before Alderweireld cleared it. Wanted the clean sheet, will take the three points and win.
