Tottenham Substitutes and Coaches

After a really tough few days following a rough two months, it is nice to breath a bit in Spursland and realize that maybe, just maybe the sky is not completely falling. Of course losses this week to both Everton and City could change that, but for a day things are okay. Tottenham did not use the bench quite the way one would have expected, but some of that was due to the enforced substitution of Matt Doherty for Serge Aurier. Ultimately, it was an exciting day for the substitute bench as young Dane Scarlett made his Premier League debut.

Matt Doherty – N/A

Matt Doherty played the last 23 minutes coming on for Serge Aurier who took a knock. Doherty did very little in that time, completing 12 of 16 passes. Doherty did not have the impact on the right that Aurier was having, but he also came on at a time when Spurs were already up 2-0 and under a conservative coach. Spurs need Doherty to contribute as he did early in the season, so a few minutes of solid action cannot hurt.

Steven Bergwijn – N/A

Why it was Bergwijn and not Bale or not Vinicius is only a question that Mourinho can answer. Coming on for Lucas Moura he was the more natural replacement. Whereas earlier in the season, Bergwijn’s two way effort was extremely important, he is one of the players seemingly most lost on the pitch and seeking to find his way. Having written that it might explain why he came on, then again, given the volume of opportunities Bergwijn has received, maybe it will be someone else’s time moving forward.

Dane Scarlett – N/A

It is really cool that we are writing about the debut of 16-year-old Dane Scarlett in the Premier League – he has appeared in Europa League. However, the fact that he did not come on until two minutes into injury time was a tad disappointing. The game was clearly in hand and at least for two minutes the young striker looked VERY willing to run. Nice to see him appear would be even nicer to see him play has he did not even get 1 touch.

José Mourinho – 6.5

Like most of the the team on the day, coach José Mourinho was good enough. The defense was better, but still has some issues. The attack was more free flowing but took the foot off the pedal on both sides of the ball. Mourinho moved well and never left the touchline as he urged more from his players. Ultimately, it seems like THAT Mourinho, the loud, encouraging, arm over the shoulder coach is the one Tottenham needs, hopefully that can persist. We want to give him a 7 but given Kane played the full 90 and Scarlett was only given 2 minutes, we cannot do it because those should have been easy decisions earlier in the match.
