Tottenham Defensive Ratings

The defense played a bit of bend but not break. While the overall opportunities were limited as West Brom only officially took four shots. However that also discounts two shots that both went in but never occurred as they were flagged for offside. Definitely not perfect, but markedly better were Spurs on defense.

Hugo Lloris – 7.5

Overall it was a quiet afternoon for Lloris who officially only made one save. However, that one save was far from routine and had a major impact on the match. Had Hugo Lloris not gotten over and blocked Diagne’s header and West Brom had scored just before the half who knows what would have happened to the psyche of the team – particularly given the dominant first half performance. Instead that nightmare was avoided and the captain showed he can still get it done. Big play that Spurs need consistently from the skipper.

Ben Davies – 6

Ben Davies biggest contribution on the day was probably his little dribble, drive, and dish to Pierre Højbjerg on Kane’s goal. It was Davies push with the ball that pulled defenders creating the crease for the Dane to split getting the ball to Kane, a hockey assist for the Welshman. On the other end Davies was far too easily beaten at the end of the first half for Mbaye Diagne’s chance. Had three tackles but also three fouls. What we have until Sergio returns from injury, but Reguilón is clearly the number one moving forward, assuming he does not go back to Madrid.

Toby Alderweireld – 7

Toby Alderweireld played relatively well and was a big step up from Eric Dier in that he did not make any major mistakes as the left-sided center half for Spurs. Was solid in his passing, and had eight long balls according to whoscored.com. While only 3 connected it was good to see Toby pinging the ball forward. Was part of a solid line to get a couple offside flags and moved well to defend across the pitch.

Davinson Sanchez – 7

Davinson Sanchez played one of his better matches of the season for Tottenham. Clearly working on his aerial defense Sanchez did well in the air winning the ball four times and getting something on his headers. Some may think he was beaten twice but he did perfect to hold the line and get Diagne twice flagged offside – which the entire backline should receive some credit for. Did not play as many long balls as Toby, but was aggressive with the ball at his feet pushing the issue, which is good from the back.

Serge Aurier – 7

Serge Aurier was having a good game before coming off with a knock on his calf for the last 20+ minutes. Aurier got forward with three crosses and two shots. Maybe unlucky not to score on his header or get an assist when Kane skidded the ball off the crossbar but it was obvious Aurier was making it happen. Looked very confident on the ball and was aggressive. Got back defensively, the knock gives some worry and the 20 minutes cost him a higher rating.
