The XI Who Should Go for Tottenham Sunday at Brighton
By Aaron Coe
Tottenham Attack
Tottenham are back with three players committed to the attack, although the real question is how do Spurs cope without Harry Kane. None of the other strikers really drop deep the way he does and although an out and out striker, Carlos Vinicius plays a much different game than does Spurs talisman. Ultimately, matches like this one are what Vinicius was brought in for, although that may also depend on how fit is Gareth Bale and a couple Argentines.
Steven Bergwijn (LW)
Steven Bergwijn has not been great for Spurs this season, but he has consistently been playing and usually provides solid effort. We have seen more and more hold-up play from Bergwijn this season and that will have to come into play in this match. Ultimately, who the center forward is, will impact how Spurs play, but they need Bergwijn out there.
Heung-Min Son (ST)
It is not Son’s natural position and makes it seem like the signing of Carlos Vinicius is a waste, but Heung-Min Son gets the first crack at replacing Harry Kane. Son has the faith and trust of his coach, it is just that he may lack that same faith and trust in himself right now. Given his goal against Liverpool was called back, Son has been struggling of late to find the target and with Kane out, Tottenham need the South Korean at his very best.
Erik Lamela (RW)
Using a pair of inverted wings, who can also swap sides, Mourinho goes with Erik Lamela out on the right. Some of this is because Lamela is very comfortable in dropping deeper and picking up the ball and playing it through to the runners. Also, Lamela is a more consistent defender in terms of effort than the other choices might be. How long Lamela gets to prove he belongs remains to be seen, but he will get that chance.
