Tottenham Defense Ratings

The Tottenham defense was a bit ragged in the first half seemingly scrambling too much. Both Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld played entirely too close to the Wycombe attackers allowing themselves to be pulled all over the pitch – literally by their jersey. Spurs have played better overall defensively, but the second half was total domination.

Ben Davies – 8

Ben Davies was one of the best players on the pitch throughout the evening. Despite being strong down the right, the Wanderers rarely made their noise from Davies side. Instead Wycombe attacked with long balls up the channels keeping the center halves under pressure, not Davies. Ben Davies was excellent in the air, winning a match high eight aerial duels. Unlucky not to get an assist to Kane in the second half. Came off late with what looked like a small knock.

Toby Alderweireld – 6.5

Neither Toby Alderweireld nor Davinson Sanchez were really good for Spurs on Monday evening, but Alderweireld was the lesser of the two. Toby was beaten off the dribble for the goal. In fairness to the Belgian he was being held by the attacker making the spin move easier. Toby passed pretty well, but was kind of bullied around the pitch, which was quite surprising.

Davinson Sanchez – 7

Davinson Sanchez was moderately better than Toby Alderweireld, but that is not saying a lot. Sanchez was unable to clear the cross that became Wycombe’s goal. Like Toby, Sanchez had a tough time with the overall physicality of Wycombe, but never lost his cool. Davinson won a lot of balls in the air, but continues to struggle with where they go after they hit his head.

Japhet Tanganga – 6.5

Japhet Tanganga started at right back and played a half for Tottenham. Tanganga had a couple clearances and a couple decent tackles. Add in two shots, one of which bounced off the post and it was a decent 45 minutes from the young Spur. However, Tanganga often looked a bit uncomfortable out in the space on the right and never seemed to get into any kind of rhythm with either Davinson Sanchez or Gareth Bale. Seems like an opportunity missed for the young defender.

Joe Hart – 6.5

Joe Hart really did not have a lot to do on the evening, making two saves and then allowing the goal. There was really little Hart could do on the goal as the ball will almost always move faster than a reacting body. Seemed a bit surprised by the two shots he faced which he parried away. Did not make a save in the last hour plus.
