Tottenham Hotspur Modified XI to Beat Sheffield United
By Aaron Coe
Tottenham Full XI and Bench
Tottenham again have a sizable bench, with a bunch of big names on it. The question is if any of them will play and if so, what will they do. Most would hope the defenders never get off the bench and that any changes be positive in nature, so what is Mourinho working with.
Defensive Subs
Joe Hart of course is the back-up keeper, although only an injury is going to necessitate a change in that position at this point. Given the changes in the back, there are several extra defenders on the bench. Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilón are both available to help provide additional cover on the wings or at fullback. Additionally, Davinson Sanchez is there as the back-up center back with Eric Dier recovering in full from a little midweek knock. Having Tanganga as a starter reduces some of the flexibility of the defensive bench but Spurs will overcome.
Midfield and Attacking Subs
Moussa Sissoko is of course part of the team; has he can seemingly play in any position on the pitch. While he is not always as effective as the staff may think, he typically gives it a go. Besides Sissoko, everyone else on the bench is an attacker, as Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, Gareth Bale, and Carlos Vinicius round out the back-up nine.
The issue with this bench is the lack of a real passer in the group, but we have seen this before and it did not seem to bother Mourinho. The plan is that whenever Dele or Ndombele come off – only 1 may go 90 – then the team brings on Sissoko and reverts to the 4-2-3-1. However, from the start, the team is more offensive and looks to get more bodies in attack with the 4-1-4-1.
