Tottenham Defense

Interestingly when it seemed that Davinson Sanchez might get the start at the weekend against Marine, we saw Toby Alderweireld again. While Toby was the calming, senior presence in the defense, with Joe Hart and Ben Davies on the pitch, Alderweireld seemed overkill, unless we see more of Davinson Sanchez in the Premier League, which is likely going to happen Wednesday against Fulham.

Hugo Lloris (GK)

Joe Hart had a near calamitous moment on Sunday, which should help to refocus the entire goalkeeping room. Hugo Lloris has shown that he learns from Hart and vice versa this season. After shutouts in his last two matches in all competitions and three in a row for the team, Lloris will be looking to keep that going. If Hugo wants more money or more years on a deal, it is earned on the field and starts Wednesday.

Sergio Reguilón (LB)

Ben Davies was the captain against Marine FC in the FA Cup, and while Sergio Reguilón came on for the last twenty minutes or so for Davies that seemed to be more of a tactical move than anything regarding Davies being tired. Sergio has seen time further up the pitch on the wing and at left back both over the last month as Mourinho has looked to expand his options. Sergio Reguilón is back to his traditional spot for Fulham and will be looking to get forward and send a couple of balls into the box.

Eric Dier (CB)

Eric Dier is almost as automatic as Højbjerg or Kane in the Tottenham line-up at this point. Dier is good at almost everything and brings an intensity to the game that is needed, particularly in the defense. Dier has been growing a vocal leader of the defense this season and you can see it on the field as he is not afraid to get on his teammates if the need arises. Depending on the front two Fulham use, Dier may be busy or may just need to stay really alert.

Davinson Sanchez (CB)

Another player making strides this season has been Davinson Sanchez. While Sanchez has been in and out of the line-up this season, that has been by design as minutes have been spread around. Sanchez has only 50 minutes less than Toby Alderweireld on the season and has played more minutes than Sergio Reguilón. Whatever the reason for the rotation out of the Premier League squad earlier this season, it seems to have paid off lately, as Sanchez has been focused and fundamentally sound.

Serge Aurier (RB)

Matt Doherty played against Marine and the last time we saw Doherty in the Premier League he was picking up a red card, so it seems likely that Serge Aurier mans the right fullback position. Outside a boneheaded play that likely cost Spurs the Leicester game, Aurier has been another much-improved defender this season. Aurier provides just a bit more coverage forward and backwards than Doherty and Spurs use that against Fulham to get behind and get the ball in the box.
