Tottenham Starting Midfield Triangle

As usual while the card says 4-2-3-1, the reality is the system often plays more like a 4-2-1-3 with the outside midfielders really serving as extra strikers. While not a true 4-3-3 on the back end the front line is not far from it. This is possible due to the flexibility and ability of the Tottenham midfield. We know two of the three starters at this point and all signs are pointing to Harry Winks joining Pierre Højbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele in the line-up.

Tanguy Ndombele (CAM)

Tanguy Ndombele has really developed into the player that everyone was hoping he would be when he signed last summer for Tottenham from Lyon. While the overall goal and assist numbers – 3 of each in all competitions – are not quite as high as one might want, Ndombele has been impacting matches more and more. Tanguy has shown incredible ability on the ball, serving as a real vacuum at times allowing Tottenham to run with possession. Additionally, Ndombele has been terrific defensively playing well off Kane from the middle third forward, look for that to continue Wednesday.

Pierre Højbjerg (DM)

Pierre Emile-Højbjerg was last seen for Tottenham trying to force his way back on the field through his coach. The five giant cleat holes in his shin told a different story and Højbjerg correctly spent the rest of the evening getting treatment. After a week to recover the Dane should be back to his marauding self. Working to be defending more and more toward the attack, Højbjerg seems to be coming back into form.

Harry Winks (DM)

Speaking of form, Harry Winks has found something of late and it is filling whatever hole Spurs have needed. Maybe that hole is making 90 passes and working to control the tempo, Winks is your guy. Maybe it is just helping control possession by making a few tackles and being well positioned, Harry has been doing that too. Learning to impact games where he does not have 100 touches is important, look for Mourinho to keep pressing, what is becoming a hot hand.
