Spurs Starting Defense

For Tottenham, who we see in defense on Wednesday is not nearly as important as how many players are playing defense. We know we have a keeper, but no one wants to see five, I mean three, defenders. The spacing is wrong, the offense is lacking, and the ambition or lack thereof hurts the fanbase and team psyche. With a game this past Sunday and then the early match on Saturday, we see some rotation in the back.

Sergio Reguilón (LB)

After giving a solid hour as an outside midfielder/extra wingback against Wolves, Reguilón is back to his regular position as the left back in a back four. This should be a match where the Spaniard has a great opportunity to run forward and create for his teammates. Hopefully, he can put a few nice crosses in and create some service for Harry Kane. Seems recovered from a little dip in form but needs a good game.

Toby Alderweireld (CB)

After sitting out the Wolves match as an unused substitute, Alderweireld is back in action but on the left side for Eric Dier. We thought this would be the case in the previous match, but it was Toby who sat out. Dier has been carrying a big load all season and this seems a better match than Leeds or a Carabao Cup semi-final to give him a little rest. Toby plays on the left to make some room for a fresh face on the right.

Joe Rodon (CB)

Davinson Sanchez has played about as well as we have seen him play all season in his last two outings, which leaves him in excellent form to face Leeds on the weekend. Joe Rodon on the other hand has had scant opportunities to play this season, given his lack of eligibility in two of the three competitions Tottenham have competed in thus far. If Rodon is not going to play in the Premier League, then what was the point? This seems the perfect opportunity for him to come on, play aggressive, get some minutes, and build some confidence.

Serge Aurier (RB)

Serge Aurier has been the steadier of the two right full backs this season. Quicker and more skilled than Matt Doherty, Aurier provides more going forward and is simply more committed defensively. Tottenham need both as they work to dominate possession and limit the chances for the Cottagers. Tottenham have often been at their best this season when Aurier is in the attacking half and putting in crosses or even finding opportunities to shoot.

Hugo Lloris (GK)

Five saves normally should have been enough for the clean sheet. However, Hugo Lloris needed a world class save to prevent the goal on the weekend and simply did not have it in him at the time. Hugo did well with a couple crosses but needs to work on his distribution as Spurs give up possession in enough ways already and do not need to add Hugo as yet another. Lloris needs a clean sheet as five goals against in three games is not great for the confidence.
