That was Fast, Tottenham Drawn Home Versus Brentford
By Aaron Coe
Tottenham Hotspur had barely beaten Stoke City in the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup, when the next draw was completed, and Spurs will host Brentford.
Tottenham Hotspur were only hours from having beaten Stoke City and already their next opponent in the Carabao Cup is known, the Brentford Bees. At first one might exhale as Spurs avoided either of the remaining Premier League sides – the two Manchester Clubs. However, those teams are very much a known entity to Spurs versus Championship side Brentford who Tottenham have not faced in some time.
Unknown Commodity
Tottenham have played Brentford twice, back in September and October of 1992 as part of the League Cup. Tottenham won at home 3-1 and then on the road in October 2-4. Since those two meetings nearly 30 years ago the clubs have not met in any competition. If you are a casual Spurs fan you probably think we were just handed a gift. However, Brentford is not just any Championship club.
Last season Brentford Bees were the talk of the Championship. After a slow start to the season, they managed to get things together and along with Leeds were scoring machines. Brentford managed a plus 42 goal difference on the season. Plus 42!
Unfortunately for the Bees, they finished 3rd and then fell on a late goal in the playoff final to Fulham. While Brentford got some revenge on Fulham by beating them earlier in the Carabao Cup, that is not the same as losing the Championship playoff final.
Brentford on a Run of Form
Currently Brentford sit fourth in the Championship, 8 points back of Norwich after a slow start to the season. However, Brentford are unbeaten in 13 matches in the Championship as of this writing. As for the Carabao Cup, Brentford has defeated four straight Premier League teams to get to the semi-final, so a fifth would not seem too big a deal.
The point is, neither the team nor the fans should take Brentford lightly, as they are quite capable and are trying to make a statement as they continue to work toward promotion in the Championship. While Spurs fans can enjoy the fact, the team avoided either Manchester Club in the semi-final, that does not mean a cakewalk by any means.
Whereas Stoke City was a team trying to keep Spurs from scoring, Brentford is going to try to outscore Tottenham, like Leicester and Liverpool. It should be a good match-up, just do not overlook the visitors.
