Tottenham’s best midfielder from the last decade
By Gary Pearson
In terms of ball-playing central midfielders, there’s been few better across the globe over the last decade than former Tottenham wizard, Luka Modric.
The diminutive midfielder made 127 impressive appearances for Tottenham. The dynamo was the ultimate creative midfielder. Like a maestro conducting a beautiful symphony, Modric precisely, and seemingly unerringly, pulled the strings from midfield.
Always responsible in possession, Luka played with a quiet confidence, a fearless unassuming bravado. He played direct whenever possible, finding a way to thread the needle and penetrate at near impossible angles.
The last eight seasons with Real Madrid further reinforced his extraordinary talent. Modric has played a pivotal part in Madrid since his arrival, helping the Galacticos to a La Liga title and four Champions League crowns.
Being dubbed Spurs’ best midfielder of the last decade is, in its own right, an exceptional honour. Consider the players he’s up against: Gareth Bale, Rafael van der Vaart, Dele Alli and Moussa Dembele were the other contenders.
Some of those players are every bit as good as Modric on their day. But Modric was, and still is, a model of consistency. You know he’ll show up for every match with the same work ethic, passion, and unbelievable, otherworldly execution.
Reserved and introspective, Modric does his talking with the ball at his feet. He’s humble, genuine and always puts his teammates’ interests before his own. And he impacts a football match like a giant would dominate a basketball game, belying completely his diminutive physical stature.
Take me back to the days when Modric was at the heart of Spurs’ midfield. I’d never worry of possession being spurned, and my heart rate would only increased when he was on the offensive, cutting through the opposing defence with one immaculate, incisive pass.
Your presence, to this day, is sorely missed in north London, Luka.
