Son Heung-Min scores at the death to hand Tottenham crucial three points
By Gary Pearson
Son Heung-Min took full advantage of Bjorn Engels‘ injury time blunder to give Tottenham a crucial three points in the top four race.
Tottenham tried desperately all afternoon to take all three points at Villa Park and were finally rewarded after Son’s decisive touch in an incredibly open and expansive Premier League encounter.
The 3-2 win could go down as the turning point in the top four race, with Chelsea set to host Manchester United on Monday evening.
The second half started much the same as the first, with both sides counter punching at will. Engels beat Toby in the air to equalize for the home side.
It was incredibly surprising to see Spurs, after showing significant defensive improvements in the last few weeks, so open at the back.
Son Heung-Min, Dele Alli and Steven Bergwijn all might have had hat tricks on a different day. Spurs created more chances this afternoon than they have in their last three away matches. But Villa also had their opportunities to take the points.
An incredibly pulsating match saw Spurs strike the final, decisive blow to break Villa hearts.
First half
A dramatic and exhilarating first half that had a bit of everything saw Tottenham come from behind to take a 2-1 lead going into the interval. Jose Mourinho won’t be satisfied with the opening 20 minutes, as his side were dominated in possession and goal-scoring opportunities.
A blustery afternoon in the midlands caused fits for both defences, with Toby Alderweireld unable to judge the flight after Ben Davies deflected a cross in the 9th minute. Hugo Lloris started to come out but hesitated and was caught flat footed. Toby poked out a toe and inadvertently nudged it past Lloris for an own goal. Ben Davies then cleared off the line minutes later after Jack Grealish skinned Toby on the byline. He fed Douglas Luiz on a platter, whose resulting shot into the gaping cage was turned away by the covering Davies.
Toby made up for his own goal in the 27th with a swivel volley a top striker would be proud of. The Belgian, whose wife had a son on Valentines Day, smashed home to draw Spurs level.
Steven Bergwijn’s energy and movement caused all sorts of problems for the home side. Villa couldn’t cope with the Dutchman’s innovation and creativity. He set Dele up on a platter and could have scored himself before being taken down in injury time to draw a penalty. Son Heung-Min, who created a golden chance for Dele, scored the follow up from his saved penalty.
Both teams shared bundles of chances in the first half. While entertaining, it was an open, expansive match with loads of defensive mistakes. Neither manager will want that run-and-gun style to persist.
