Ranking Tottenham’s top five performers so far this season
By Gary Pearson
1. Son Heung-Min
Spurs almost involuntarily turn to Son Heung-Min for inspiration in Harry Kane’s absence. They have in previous seasons and continue to do so. There is a common denominator in this top five list, a theme that mirrors Tottenham’s season. Each player has struggled through adversity, strife, and nobody, not even Son, has had it all their own way.
Son has found life difficult since Kane tore his hamstring on New Year’s Day. Lacking a bit of sharpness and not nearly as clinical in front of goal, Son has battled through, even when frustration bubbles over. Sent off twice — with one being overturned — the South Korean has made some dubious undisciplined decisions.
But Son is still, irrefutably, Spurs principle man in the talisman’s absence. His wonder goal against Burnley is but a glimpse from a laundry list of magical moments. His desire, affable character and pure footballing ability has him lauded by supporters. Son almost always answers the bell on the pitch and has seven goals and seven assists in 20 top flight appearances.
Most attacks either funnel through, or are directly influenced by Son, whose importance to the side cannot be overstated. He deserves lofty praise and will be a central figure to any future success.
