Ranking Tottenham’s top five performers so far this season
By Gary Pearson
4. Toby Alderweireld
Where would we be without our Belgian stalwart marshalling the rearguard? While he hasn’t enjoyed his best season, Toby’s performances have been head and shoulders better than his defensive colleagues.
Toby’s pinpoint expansive through balls from the back allow Tottenham to transition from defence to attack quicker than it takes to poke fun at Paul Merson. Marshalling the back line in 24 of 25 top flight matches, Alderweireld is the one trusted staple in an otherwise unpredictable, inconsistent defence.
In those 24 matches, Alderweireld hasn’t missed a minute of action, a testament to his fitness and reliability. Toby has endured his fair share of trying moments. Sometimes off the pace, he has appeared uncharacteristically sluggish and slow. Those adverse moments, however, aren’t wholly due to any glaring individual inadequacies, but are more attributed to the lack of help he’s receiving from his defensive teammates. Locked at number four on the list, Toby is another player truly deserving of his contract extension.
