The truth behind Tottenham Hotspur gaffer’s new buzz cut
By Gary Pearson
Jose Mourinho is again at the centre of a media frenzy at Tottenham after shaving his head after beating Manchester City 2-0.
Some say Mourinho is making a clear point to Pep Guardiola, iterating that he can pull off a shaved head better than the City manager. Some on Twitter are saying that Mourinho is paying homage to Guardiola, while others believe he is merely going along with Daniel Levy’s follically challenged theme.
A two-thirds life crisis could be the reason for the gaffer’s decision to becoming bald. Or he might have decided on the aerodynamic do to gain more speed while sprinting down the byline in celebration of a terrific Spurs goal.
Prior to the start of the 2006-07 season, Mourinho, who was then managing Chelsea, shaved his head, so it’s not the first time. Maybe he shaved it all off in preparation of a war-like end to the current campaign. He might complement his new look with some war paint to emphatically get the point across.
Everything Mourinho does, whether trivial or not, gets magnified to the utmost degree. And he knows it. He loves the spotlight more than most elite managers, and thrives as the centre of attention.
Another hypothesis revolves around the astute manager taking the attention off his team by putting it squarely on himself. Maybe he thinks it will allow his team to play looser, freer and without constraint.
Maybe the lads in the locker room needed some humour in their lives, too stricken by the gravity of the mounting pressure they’re all under.
Then again, maybe Mourinho just wanted a fresh new haircut.
