How Tottenham could lineup with Steven Bergwijn in the team
By Gary Pearson
Along with the news of Steven Bergwijn’s imminent arrival from PSV, Tottenham should soon receive a clean bill of health, which will make for a formidable prospective starting 11.
While we are still waiting on official confirmation from the club regarding Bergwijn’s signing, various reputable publications are assured the deal is done. And that’s incredibly exciting for Tottenham, who have been in dire need of arsenal up front since the fateful day when Harry Kane’s hamstring popped.
Tanguy Ndombele and Ben Davies could return as soon as this weekend’s match against Manchester City. Regardless of whether they get the starting nod, Jose Mourinho has an incredibly talented first team to get excited about in the long-term.
And there’s even reinforcements at most positions, putting Spurs in a strong position for the final third of the campaign. Tottenham remain long shots to secure their fifth successive top four spot, but with artillery reinforcements coming in the form of a strong, energetic, lively 22-year-old Dutchman, things are looking up at Hotspur Way.
The prospective new arrival takes up a central position as the lone front man. He can also play from the left, but Spurs badly need him to take responsibility centrally. Dele Alli supports the 22-year-old while Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura are back in their favoured attacking midfield roles, where each can run at defenders on the dribble. The South Korean and Brazilian will be licking their lips at the prospect of being back in their natural positions.
Giovani Lo Celso, Spurs’ standout player in recent weeks, is the maestro in the centre of the park. Pulling the strings and dictating tempo, Lo Celso will also showcase his underrated defensive nous in supporting Tanguy Ndombele.
The Frenchman is back from injury and is restored in his holding role, where he looked incredibly comfortable prior to the setback. Ndombele and Lo Celso will need time to gel as a tandem, but have no ceiling where talent is concerned. Once they source the same wavelength, opposing teams should be worried.
Ben Davies is also back from injury soon and has to be shoo-in for the starting left back role. He will provide Spurs with the stability they have needed so desperately on the left side of defence. Supporters will need to show patience where Davies is concerned, as the Welshman hasn’t played in over two months.
I personally prefer Davinson Sanchez to Jan Vertonghen, simply due to the Colombian’s breakneck pace and sheer athleticism. While I understand acutely how prone to an error he is, Sanchez’s ability to make a last-ditch tackle makes up for his occasional erratic play. I love Jan but feel there isn’t enough pace when he and compatriot Toby play side by side.
