Tottenham reopen negotiations with AC Milan for Polish striker
By Gary Pearson
With only four days left in the transfer period, Tottenham have reopened negotiations with AC Milan over Polish striker Krzysztof Piątek.
AC Milan were previously unwilling to budge on Tottenham’s wish to sign Piatek on loan. That hard line has since softened, with Spurs and Chelsea battling to win the Piatek sweepstakes. A primary stipulation of the loan deal, however, will most likely have a clause including an obligation to buy the front man permanently.
AC Milan aren’t conceding on their £25 million valuation of the their Polish asset. But Spurs face stiff competition, as their West London rivals are showing keen interest in the 24-year-old. A loan deal with an obligation to buy is tantamount to a permanent move, albeit slightly delayed.
Tottenham HQ has its reservations about signing permanently Piatek, who signed for Milan just over a year ago, on Jan. 23, 2019. He scored by the bundle after arriving at Milan, but the goals have since dried up. Maybe a new club and environment will ail his recent goal-scoring woes.
He definitely fits the physical prowess of a prototypical Jose Mourinho striker. Piatek is 6 feet tall, mobile and a solid target man. And with the purported imminent signing of Steven Bergwijn on the cards, Tottenham can rest slightly easier knowing the fruitfulness of their season isn’t entirely predicated on signing Piatek.
The ideal outcome sees Spurs signing both Piatek and Bergwijn. The pair could alternate leading the front line. They would also compliment each other in the same first team, with Bergwijn happy to line up on the left wing.
What a change of fortune a double signing would signify for a Spurs sign devoid currently of a pure attacking threat. Son Heung-Min, Dele Alli and Lucas Moura are doing their utmost standing in for the injured Harry Kane. None of the trifecta, though, are comfortable holding up play with their back to ball as the lone front man.
Tottenham supporters won’t rest easy until confirmation of signing a bonafide front man officially comes down the pipeline.
