As Tottenham’s urgent search continues for a replacement striker, Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic has entered the rumour-mill fray.

Real Madrid only purchased the Serbian in the summer, for a monstrous fee of £55 million before add-ons. This feels similar to the Kyrzsztof Piatek saga, which is yet to be concluded.

Jovic dominated the Bundesliga before landing in the Spanish capital, with the youngster scoring 17 goals in 25 starts with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Serbian striker, however, has struggled to adapt to life in Spain, scoring just once in 18 appearances, though most of those after coming on as a substitute. If Tottenham want the 22-year-old, it would more than likely have to be temporarily, as part of a loan deal. That suits Real Madrid perfectly. It feels like the Galacticos want to offload their struggling front man, hoping he regains his form in England before recalling him.

But with the mounting pressure on the north London club to bring in a front man, Spurs aren’t really in a position of strength, and a loanee like Jovic could be precisely the solution they’re looking for, albeit a temporary one.

Jose Mourinho, if keen on the deal, will use his personal relationship with Madrid’s president Florentino Perez as leverage to try get the loan across the line.

Jovic scorched the Bundesliga last season, a league not dissimilar to England’s top flight. He has the physicality to cope with the Premier League’s most rugged defenders and is particularly good with his back to goal, a facet of Tottenham’s current game that is particularly weak.

And who knows, an option to buy might filter into the equation if everything goes according to plan. Madrid have endless coffers and will be on the prowl to find a permanent replacement for the outgoing Serbian, which would benefit greatly Tottenham.

And even if the loan doesn’t turn into a permanent deal, Jovic is in the position to help Spurs through a rather precarious predicament. Loaning Jovic would also present a low-risk financial option, allowing Tottenham the time to reevaluate their current plight. By the time Harry Kane is back to full health, the club can decide whether they want to continue on with this one-striker madness or, if Jovic is thriving in north London, present Real Madrid with a package they can’t refuse to purchase him.

Either way, his goal-scoring nous is needed immediately. Having a proven goalscorer, who is still only 22 years old, lead the line might be the best solution Spurs can hope for considering the tight pinch they’re in.
