Securing a top four spot, with Tottenham trailing Chelsea by eight points, is looking more grim each week, but it’s not too late if Daniel Levy gets his act together.

Despite the disappointing 0-0 draw at Watford, Tottenham miraculously made up a single point in the standings on Chelsea, who lost at Newcastle to an Isaac Hayden stoppage time winner. Assuming Liverpool will dispatch Manchester United at Anfield this afternoon, Tottenham will finish the weekend in a better position than when it started, albeit marginally.

I’m choosing, like everybody else, to ignore Wolves top four ambitions. Though their meteoric rise, which included yet another win, this time over Southampton, leads one to believe they might have a better chance than both Spurs and United at a coveted top four spot. But surely they’ll come back down to reality soon, right?

Tottenham cannot bridge the gap and close in on Chelsea without immediate reinforcements. Mr. Levy, if you’re reading, the time for you to change your ways, even if temporarily, has never more pressing. We all know you like to meticulously massage potential new buys, negotiating for every last penny in finding the perfect addition. Undoubtedly there is a time and place for that shrewd penny pinching.

It’s clear that now is not that time.

Without a striker and at least one more player, either another central midfielder, a left or right back, our season is doomed. Unable to score in three straight matches, Tottenham yesterday levelled their worst goalless drought in six years. Even more foreboding, Spurs didn’t muster a shot on target, other than the goal line clearance in the final minute, in the second half against Watford.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Whether it’s Gabriel Barbosa, Moussa Dembele or Krzysztof Piatek, Tottenham unequivocally need a front man. And with immediacy. I won’t dwell on the fact that this saga has gone on for too long, relying too heavily on the injury prone Harry Kane for half a decade without bringing in a suitable secondary front man. It’s a systemic error at the most rudimentary level, and Levy must take the full brunt of culpability for such an inconceivable, inexplicable and, frankly, unforgivable recurring blunder.

Albert Einstein is widely credited with saying, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.”

Well, Mr. Levy, it’s time to show us you’re not totally insane, or too far gone. We hope there is still time and tenure to bring you back from La La Land.

Chelsea’s next four matches are against Arsenal, Leicester, Manchester United and us. Which team secures fourth spot could be decided in the next month. So time is of the essence, Mr. Levy. Give Jose what he needs to salvage what has thus far been the most disappointing campaign since the darker days preceding Mauricio Pochettino’s fantastic reign.
