Defenders

Paulo Gazzaniga 8/10

Paulo Gazzaniga made two excellent saves, both from headers, to keep Spurs within reach. van Dijk’s first half close range attempt and Sadio Mane’s second half header were both parried away by the Argentine keeper. He did what he had to do to give his side a chance.

Japhet Tanganga 7/10

What a time for a Premier League debut. The 20-year-old played with a fantastic youthful fearlessness. He blocked one off the line and harassed Sadio Mane throughout. Unfortunately Tanganga was undone by a moment of brilliance from Roberto Firmino, who showed experience, poise and skill to out wait the youngster.

Toby Alderweireld 7/10

Toby was solid throughout. He played well in his first game as Tottenham’s captain. Toby cleared from danger 11 times, showcasing how much pressure Spurs were under, particularly in the first half.

Davinson Sanchez 8/10

Davinson Sanchez was the inarguably the best player on the pitch. Lively, quick and forever on his toes, Sanchez broke up numerous threatening attacks. He bossed Mo Salah physically and showed how much of an asset he is to the team.
