Mourinho needs to be careful not to alienate important Tottenham mid

Jose Mourinho needs to be careful of not ostracizing Tottenham’s Harry Winks, who has dropped down the pecking order since the Portuguese gaffer arrived on the scene.
Winks was an integral figure in Pochettino’s plans. The Englishman was a permanent fixture in Tottenham’s starting team. But things have changed drastically for Winks, who is finding it hard under Mourinho to make a permanent impact on Tottenham’s first 11.
An injury kept Winks out of contention for a brief spell, but since his return he hasn’t been entrusted the same way he was under Pochettino. The 23-year-old has a massive upside. Mobile, quick and adaptable, Winks has improved significantly in the last few seasons.
Providing a strong fulcrum at the base of midfield, Winks sprays the ball about with tempo and, when he’s on, unerring accuracy.
His passing range, however, often comes into question. Winks isn’t confident in playing long incisive passes. He hesitates, often losing the opportunity to expose the defence. While his overall game is by no means perfect, Mourinho has to be careful not to alienate a player who has become an important cog in Tottenham’s wheel.
Reports of Manchester United and Manchester City’s interest in Winks are filtering through, a terribly disconcerting thought for Tottenham. According to The Mirror, Athletic and others, Pep Guardiola has taken a liking to Winks’ ability to spearhead possession from the back.
Mourinho must nurture Winks and other players of his lofty potential. I think sometimes we forget that Winks is still only 23 years old. He is a permanent fixture for the Three Lions and was an integral force in Tottenham’s drive to the Champions League Final. Having Winks fall from grace shouldn’t be a viable option for Mourinho, who needs full buy-in from all of his younger assets.
Isolating Winks is not the answer, even if his performances have underwhelmed as of late. He needs to feel like he’s an important part of the side, just like he did under Pochettino’s tenure. Winks needs to improve various facets of his overall aptitude, something Mourinho can help him with.
Rather than neglect the England midfielder, Mourinho must empower, teach and inspire. Winks is a key player now and for the future in north London. I just hope Mourinho realizes it.
