In a long line of grandiose rumours, Bleacher Report is reporting that Tottenham are interested in signing Bayern Munich centre back Jerome Boateng.

Boateng is unsettled at Munich and ready for a new challenge. He has appeared in just eight Bundesliga matches thus far this season. The German international is, however, 31 years old, positioning him between Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in terms of age.

It doesn’t make sense at first glance for Tottenham to want yet another aging centre back. Actually, it doesn’t quite add up at second glance either.

That is, until you dig a little bit deeper. Spurs might be able to purchase the want away veteran for only £12 million. Now you might start seeing the lustre to signing the German World Cup winner.

By no means is this a done deal, with the bean barely starting to sprout on this rumour. Is it worth signing Boateng for a year or two at a slashed rate?

I’m not sure it is. Yes, he has a massive upside. He would bring stability, experience and a winning pedigree to the side.

But Spurs already have enough experience in their rearguard. They cannot afford to have another slow, sluggish player patrolling central defence, no matter how familiar he is with winning.

Next. Current group of players as much to blame as coaches. dark

Tottenham shouldn’t spend their time looking at players of yesteryear, even if their upside is incredibly alluring. Instead they should be concentrating on trying to sign younger centre backs, like Ben White, or Dayot Upamecano, who have their entire futures ahead of them.
