Defence

Paulo Gazzaniga 5/10

Paulo didn’t have much to do and can’t be faulted for Southampton’s goal.

Serge Aurier 2/10

Poor crossing throughout, Serge Aurier simply isn’t good enough to compete at an elite level. Average defensively today, Serge was more at fault for his lack of offensive nous. Not a good day for Aurier.

Jan Vertonghen 4/10

Jan had an average day at the office. Still too laboured and slow, Jan coughed up possession a few times. But he was one of Tottenham’s best at the back today, which is saying something.

Toby Alderwerield 2/10

Looked like Toby tied one on last night for New Year’s. Skinned on Southampton’s opener, Toby wasn’t nearly reliable or stable enough against one of the worst home side’s in the top flight.

Ryan Sessegnon 4/10

With no dangerous crosses, Ryan Sessegnon had another ineffective match. He attempted a few crosses but isn’t getting forward nearly enough. That’s not all his fault, though. Spurs are unable to sustain pressure in the offensive third, making it hard for Sessegnon to advance.
