Mourinho’s message to Aurier about Twitter directed at entire team
By Gary Pearson
While Jose Mourinho was obviously offering advice to Serge Aurier about the Ivorian’s use of Twitter, his message was clearly directed at the entire Tottenham team.
If you don’t set boundaries in the modern era of football as a manager, things can quickly get away from you. Without boundaries, the roosters will quickly rule the roost. Mourinho, though early indications show the Portuguese to be more relaxed and chilled at Spurs, has old-school principles, believing strongly in order, systems and most importantly, respect.
Aurier hasn’t done much wrong off the pitch since joining Spurs, redeeming himself from a rather sordid, transgression-filled past. His on-field play, however, has been erratic and unpredictable. But off the field he has been a model citizen while living in London.
Aurier, during his time in France, was mired in a controversy after making homophobic slurs directed at former manager Laurent Blanc on Twitter. That was in the past, though. Mourinho made the comments to Aurier about behaving on Twitter to ensure mutual respect, not only between them but the rest of the team, too.
Without respect, Mourinho has nothing, such is the case with anyone of his hubris, station and stature. It’s refreshing to see a manager hold his players to account through discipline and respect. Aurier has transformed his play under Mourinho, becoming more consistent, reliable and far less erratic.
Respect for his new manager, who has shown great faith when others might have written him off, has a lot to do with the Ivorian’s improved play.
There is a reason this story is making headlines in many major news outlets. Because Mourinho wanted it to. It’s an example for the rest of the team to follow. Be respectful, carry yourselves with continual integrity and professionalism and act in accordance with the club’s high moral standing.
Because if you don’t, you’ll quickly find yourself on the outside looking in, unable to regain a foothold in the team. Mourinho must be careful, though. As he has repeatedly alienated many players in the past, pushing the envelope too far. He must demand respect without dispelling the aura of a tyrant.
But Mourinho is a new man, restored, chilled and calm so he knows this time where to draw the line. At least we hope he does, because no empire was built without discipline, respect and a touch of adoration.
