Tottenham secure second clean sheet, whitewash Burnley 5-0
By Gary Pearson
Tottenham’s high-octane attack was in the mood, as Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane ran riot against Burnley in the home side’s 5-0 win.
Kane bagged a brace stop and can’t stop scoring against Burnley. The marksman has nine in his last 10 games against the Clarets.
Recovering extremely well from their midweek disappointment, Spurs showed their expansive intent from the off. In the 4th minute Kane launched a long-range rocket Nick Pope barely had time to react to. It was the remedy the home side was in search of.
A blend of quick, short passing moves mixed perfectly with long rangy passes and mazy individual runs memorized a confused Burnley defence. Aside from the Manchester United match, watching Tottenham’s offensive resurgence under Jose Mourinho has been an absolute treat. Engrossing, dynamic football has the Tottenham faithful revelling as they watch in awe.
Spurs could have scored five or six in the first half alone. Moussa Sissoko hit the post from a wonderful move and Lucas Moura tapped home from Dele Alli’s flicked header.
Then came a moment of pure genius from Spurs’ favourite Son. The South Korean took possession just outside his own box and burst forward with devastating pace and power. Bullying his way past half of Burnley’s team, Son found himself in on goal. He needed to compose himself which he did with aplomb, passing nonchalantly past Pope for Tottenham’s third. It was a goal out of the top drawer, a true worldy from one of the most in form players in Europe. Watch Son’s stock rise with every passing week. It’s been a privilege witnessing his climb to superstardom over the years.
Moussa Sissoko toe poked the cherry on top of Spurs’ cake, scoring a lovely fifth to pour salt in Burnley’s wound. Sissoko has scored two goals since Mourinho took over less than a month ago. Like Dele, Sissoko has sourced, after a long period of dormancy, his offensive mojo.
While unleashing for five home goals is reason enough to celebrate, Mourinho will be most proud of keeping a clean sheet. It’s just Spurs’ second of the season, an area that the gaffer is trying to substantially improve. Spurs, particularly the side’s rearguard, can build off this confidence-boosting result.
What a day of football at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Truly inspiring.
