Tottenham supporters’ letter to Mauricio Pochettino
By Gary Pearson
Ten days have passed since Mauricio Pochettino was relieved of his duties at Tottenham, giving us enough time to process our emotions on what was a truly remarkable five-and-a-half years.
Pochettino yesterday broke his silence by releasing the following statement to the club and its supporters:
"“I would like to thank also everyone I met at Tottenham, all the club staff and the football players during these five and a half years.”Finally I would like to give a special mention to the fans who make this club so great with their fantastic support.“I gave the best of me to accomplish the objectives I was asked for in our first meeting. There were equally tough challenges as exciting success.“Best wishes for the future, I am sure we will cross paths again.”"
It’s hard to express in words just how much Pochettino meant to our club. He took the job with a vision, a mission, an aspirational project in mind. Not only did the Argentine maestro pour his heart and soul into the job, he single-handedly transformed Tottenham Hotspur, bringing our glorious club back to prominence.
Endearing himself to supporters across the globe, Pochettino will always, as Jose Mourinho already said, be welcome at Hotspur Way. Welcomed with open arms and greeted like the demigod he is.
Most impressive is the steadfast relationships he built with his players. His belief in them, his belief in the club, and his belief in the project. The number of players who reached – or were on the way to reaching – their full potential under Pochettino’s reign is staggering.
On March 2, 2018, for his 46th birthday, I wrote a piece expressing 46 reasons why he was one of the world’s best. Those 46 reasons barely scratch the surface.
The results he achieved did us and the club proud. Four successive top four finishes in the world’s most competitive league, all, in comparison with other Premier League juggernauts, a paltry budget. He came close in the FA Cup, losing in the 2017 semifinal to Chelsea. And then there’s last season’s Champions League campaign.
I can’t thank the gaffer enough for making, with a depleted, injury-riddled lineup, that legendary run happen. You brought tears to many grown men’s eyes.
While some will deem his inability to win a trophy as a failure during his time here, nobody who truly understands football and what Tottenham have been through believe that. You are an inspiration to all of us, and we will always put you on a pedestal, holding you in the highest esteem.
Your legend will live in perpetuity in North London. And, like you said, we will certainly cross paths again.
