Rumours that Jose Mourinho might take over at Tottenham Hotspur if Mauricio Pochettino leaves are misplaced and incredibly shortsighted.

The self-proclaimed Special One, even if Pochettino’s tenure comes to an end, is not the right fit for the Lilywhites. The polarizing manager was shown his marching orders after a dismal final season at Manchester United. In his defence, things at Old Trafford have been in disarray since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Mourinho’s impressive trophy collection speaks for itself. He has won everything possible in club football and he certainly knows it. Nobody can question his ability to get extract the most from teams in the inchoate stage of his tenure. He’s an expert at stepping in and transforming radically the results in the embryonic stage of a fresh assignment at a new club. Charismatic and charming, Mourinho instantly builds rapport and trust with a new set of players.

He showcased his ability, at Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and even Manchester United, to revolutionize, revamp and expeditiously return each club to their former glory.

He would, unquestionably, find a way to shore up Tottenham’s porous defence. Mourinho has made a career of mending leaky defences. Often described as boring, structured and dry, Mourinho-led sides are incredibly effective at frustrating opponents.

However, Mourinho’s magic is effective only in the short-term. His dogmatic, disciplinarian, old-school approach works wonders, until players grow weary that is. And, based on a long line of examples to draw from, players are guaranteed to tire of Mourinho’s antics. After seeing initial success, The Special One has an unparalleled ability to alienate his players. Oftentimes in the past players under his rule end up revolting, unable to tolerate his tyrannical leadership style.

Next. Tottenham need to back Mauricio and stand behind their embattled manager. dark

Tottenham have no interest in a short-term fix, as it would merely prolong the club’s long-term agony.

Hiring Mourinho would result in short-term gain for long-term pain. And Spurs are not interested in a short-term plaster, particularly after Pochettino has worked tirelessly, and successfully, for five seasons to make Spurs relevant again.
