Which Tottenham players are on the chopping block come January?
By Gary Pearson
Facing a winter transfer period of change, Tottenham are expected to offload a number of players, many of whom are enduring fruitless starts to the campaign.
Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Victor Wanyama, Christian Eriksen, Serge Aurier, according to The Mirror, are on the chopping block come January.
Dier and Wanyama’s fates are all but sealed going into the winter transfer period. Both players, after dealing with extensive injury woes, are shadows of their former selves, neither of whom barely get a sniff. While it’s a minute sample size to draw from, Dier endured one of the worst performances of any player all season at Brighton last week.
With only two substitute appearances in the Premier League, Wanyama has barely seen the light of day this season. In regard to both players, one has to disregard nostalgia and think about what’s best for the club. Expect both to be sold as soon as Tottenham can offload them.
We’ve all heard ad nauseam the rumours circling Eriksen’s potential departure. His listless performances since the start of the season have only emboldened and reinforced the merit for his exodus. The upcoming winter transfer season will be the last chance Spurs have of cashing in on their distracted and disgruntled Dane. Based on the current untenable circumstances, Eriksen must be shown the door. The problem, however, stems from his severely diminished stock on the market. Who’s going to pay a premium for a midfielder whose constant disappearing acts more resemble Houdini than an influential professional footballer?
If I had my way both Rose and Aurier would also be shipped off to pastures anew. Though that’s not a reality Tottenham can currently consider. Aurier needs to go. That much is clear. In the interest of not beating a dead horse, I won’t go off on a rant about how damaging Aurier is to our club. I’ve spoken about his adverse impact on Tottenham Hotspur innumerable times before. Suffice to say, he needs to be handed his marching orders.
While I feel Rose’s best days at Tottenham are behind him, the club cannot sell him without a reputable, established replacement at the ready. We all saw how Ben Davies responded to his chance against Brighton, nullifying any opportunity he has of regaining a starting left back role.
So that’s where Spurs stand on possible outgoing players heading into the winter transfer period. Hopefully Pochettino brings a new crop of players in so he can part ways with those who no longer have a meaningful part to play in the club’s future.
