Tottenham’s best team and formation for 2019-20 campaign
By Gary Pearson
Now that our nerves have finally settled after deadline day hysteria, let’s delve into Tottenham’s best starting 11 for the coming campaign.
A few days ago most of us were concerned about Tottenham’s depth, or lack their of. Well now, other than for Harry Kane, Spurs have a strong replacement at pretty much every position. The signings of Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele have pole vaulted Tottenham’s chances of winning trophies on all fronts.
In the coming days, HQ is going to take a look at numerous potential formations and starting sides, but let’s start with the strongest team at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal. This side doesn’t take any current injury concerns into consideration, and is based wholly on having a completely healthy team.
A 4-2-3-1 is Tottenham’s best formation, though a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield could also prove extremely effective.
Spurs’ best formation: 4-2-3-1
You can see how much talent is on display, and even more pleasingly, the abundance of skill on the bench. Let’s start at the back, positions that pretty much pick themselves. Juan Foyth should make the right back role his own, though Kyle Walker Peters might have something to say about that.
The best defensive partnership in the league comprises a solid spine down the centre. Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are shoo-ins in the middle, with Davinson Sanchez a wonderful third option.
Danny Rose will continue to maraud down the left but will be watching over his shoulder as understudy Sessegnon will be provided opportunities to develop and come of age. Seeing how Sessegnon develops under Pochettino is an incredibly exciting prospect, and it will be intriguing to see what effect Rose has on the youngster. Ben Davies is yet another option for Spurs on the left side.
Harry Winks and Ndombele make up a formidable deep midfield pairing, both of whom can move the ball with aplomb. The pair should complement each other splendidly, just like Moussa Sissoko and Winks did last season.
Speaking of Moussa, it’s almost impossible to conceive that he might have to start on the bench after last season’s brilliance. Such is the embarrassment of riches the club now has at that position. Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama are also waiting in the wings for their chance to become relevant again, though Wanyama might still leave in the next window.
Son Heung-Min and Dele Allii take their rightful spots in support of Harry Kane, while new arrival Giovani Lo Celso tucks in behind our leading goal-scoring maestro, Harry Kane.
Lucas Moura and Christian Eriksen will be rotated throughout the gruelling campaign but might have to play second fiddle to the aforementioned starters, a testament to the quality of Spurs’ starting front four.
Would you make any changes to this starting 11? How about the formation?
