Should Tottenham add another midfielder?

It was recently published that Tottenham had agreed on a deal with Giovani Lo Celso ahead of his transfer from Real Betis but is another midfielder what they really need?

No. Well, yes and no, but mainly no. The issue here is not that Lo Celso isn’t a good enough player and not that he won’t improve the team.  He is an excellent player and Tottenham will be a better side simply by adding him.  Having him and his talent on the training ground and on the pitch is something that Tottenham will benefit from with nearly immediate effect.  That said they simply have more pressing needs.

A new left-back is the most pressing at the moment and Ryan Sessegnon seems to be the most obvious choice.  All the big clubs in England would benefit from the player who seems most likely to finally fill the shoes of Ashley Cole for the national side as a dominant left-sided player for the foreseeable future.

The only issue holding this up is that while Fulham seem to know that the player is on his way out they are unwilling to compromise on the price of the player. Sessegnon appears to be the only way that the club will be able to buoy themselves against the cost of relegation and they intend to get as much as they can for him.

This is what is making the player more expensive than Tottenham would like and has slowed down a deal for him.  The good news is that the player does appear to prefer Tottenham over the other names that have been suggested for him.

He has his feet firmly on the ground and knows that at a club like Tottenham where youth development is taken seriously he will be able to meet his potential as a player.  The pull of Pochettino is also heavy because of his track record when developing players.

With the cost of Sessegnon rising and Levy always keeping his eye firmly on the budget and hand tightly grasped around the purse strings it only makes sense that one would be skeptical that Tottenham would add three highly expensive players in the same summer.

With Tanguy Ndombele already in the door and having taken up a large part of the transfer budget, it makes sense that people would worry. Lo Celso is a great player but Sessegnon is a necessary one.  If Tottenham can add both it would be perfect.  It just appears unlikely that they will and so one is forced to question which would be better.
