Tottenham getting closer to securing Lo Celso from Betis
By Gary Pearson
Tottenham are inching closer to signing Lo Celso from Real Betis after a renewed £62 million bid to sign the 23-year-old Argentine.
Spurs made a £53 million bid a few weeks ago, a lowball, undercut offer seen by Betis as a ploy to get the Spanish club’s attention. Daniel Levy, with their latest increased bid, have definitely got Betis’ attention now. Even with the new, more realistic offer, Spurs are still about £10 million short of a suitable amount for the Spanish club to release their 23-year-old star.
Lo Celso wants a move to the Premier League, and more specifically, is interested in joining forces with compatriot Mauricio Pochettino in north London. Betis were originally asking for about £90 million, but have changed their tune to spark more tangible interest in their precious Argentine.
Spurs won’t get into a bidding war with other teams for their marked man. However, paying £60 million for such an influential target is feasible for Spurs, who need to dip into the transfer market with a big-money signing to put the Premier League on notice.
Now is the perfect time for Tottenham to lure Lo Celso to Hotspur Way, particular in the aftermath of a devastating Champions League final loss. This type of signing would buoy Spurs’ supporters, and inject a new lease on life for a side in need of positive news.
Lo Celso impressed most in the Europa League, scoring five goals. WhoScored.com can’t find any weaknesses to the 23 year old’s game, a testament to how far he’s come since starting his career Rosario Central, who ply their trade in Argentina’s first division. Lo Celso’s skill set incorporates way more than goals and assists, as the Argentine has the ability to dictate the tempo and control proceedings from midfield.
Pochettino will push hard to get this signing across the line. It’s a test for Daniel Levy, which will determine whether he’s actually amenable to opening his pocket-book so Spurs can once again dream of Premier League, and Champions League, glory. It will also prove to Pochettino that he’s willing to trust his gaffer with a wad of cash necessary to challenge consistently with Europe’s elite.
