Eric Dier finishes season on a high, Tottenham secure top four spot
By Gary Pearson
Tottenham showed character and resolve in a 2-2 draw with Everton to secure a top-four spot, finishing a point above Arsenal in the Premier League standings.
Despite hobbling over the Premier League line, Spurs had no intention of bringing into play their superior goal difference. Although recent results haven’t gone Tottenham’s way – only 10 points from the final 36 available – in the Premier League, today’s home result capped off another successful season for the Lilywhites.
Taking into consideration the staggering number of matches missed through injury, Spurs can be proud of the way they finished the otherwise inconsistent campaign. Undoubtedly, Mauricio Pochettino won’t rest on his laurels and will look to significantly bolster his squad in the off-season.
As he recently said, the club needs to have a solid plan to consistently challenge at the top.
“We know very well that we need to operate in a different way and that doesn’t mean to spend more or less money. It’s to be transparent and say: ‘This is what we want for the next year, or the next five or 10 years.'”
Eric Dier finishes season on a high
Eric Dier, after a tumultuous, injury-plagued year, finished the campaign on a high after scoring his first goal of the season. Fernando Llorente played a role in Spurs’ opener, the target man getting his noggin on the early corner. Dier was the first to react, smashing home from close range.
The Englishman, who made 23 Premier League appearances in 2018/19, will take some solace in the way he acquitted himself on Sunday. Recent suspensions and injuries to the rearguard forced Dier to play in central defence, an unfamiliar role of late for the 25-year-old.

Before Davinson Sánchez arrived at the club, and during Toby Alderweireld’s extensive injury absence, Dier slotted in regularly in the heart of defence. His versatility has always been an asset to Spurs, even if it’s being utilized more sparingly these days.
In previous seasons Dier was consistently one of the first players on Mauricio Pochettino’s team list. To push on and ascend to new heights, Tottenham need Dier to return to his former glory. And knowing the Englishman’s character, it shouldn’t be too long before he does exactly that.
It’s fitting for Spurs to finish on a high in the Premier League after a rollercoaster season, and while the inquest about the final third of the season is sure to come, let’s just sit back and enjoy the fact that our beloved Spurs will partake once more in Europe’s most prestigious tournament; a tournament Tottenham have a chance of winning in less than three weeks.
