Tottenham target Joachim Anderson offers little on potential move
One of the hottest properties in European football in January was Sampdoria’s young star center-back Joachim Anderson. He has commented on the speculation in a recent interview.
With Toby Alderweireld likely on his way away from Tottenham in the summer when his 25 million pound release clause will be activated the North London club have been linked to a large amount of central defensive replacements. The most common of these has been Joachim Anderson. The 6’4’’ Danish giant currently plies his trade with Italian mid-table side Sampdoria and is one of the best defensive prospects in Europe.
Tottenham were linked with him heavily during the January transfer window and anyone who is associated with the club or who supports it knows how that went. Spurs spent another window linked to a variety of talented and young up and coming players and yet not making moves for any of them.
The rumors about Anderson though have not stopped regardless and it is because of this that the player was forced to address them in a post-match interview following his weekend match with Sampdoria:
"“Everyone is asking me at the moment where I am going. Of course I also get it that big clubs would be interested in me and that is very nice to hear, but at the moment it is not the time to talk about a new club, I am proud to play for Sampdoria and I want to do everything we can to put ourselves in the Europa League.”"
With this the Danish star added very little to the narrative surrounding his potential move to Tottenham. He professionally respected his current employers and that as much as anything makes him an even more appealing player.
The prospect of player for Tottenham. A Premier League team, who though cheaper than many of their colleagues in the Premiership, offer wages that are on average higher than the usual Serie A ones as well as appear in European competition regularly is something that has to appeal to Anderson. That said in a time when it appears players have somewhere between nil and zero respect for their clubs or the supporters who essentially pay for their lavish lifestyles this sort of respect is admirable.
Tottenham as they continue to build on their already remarkable progress should take this sort of character into consideration. These are the sort of players who make clubs into longterm successes. If Spurs are able to get the signing of the player across the line over the summer it could turn out to be some of the best business the club has done in a long time.
