Kyle Walker-Peters dazzles for Tottenham
By Zaph Hutson
Tottenham Hotspur Kyle Walker-Peters had a night he will remember for the rest of his career on Wednesday. With 3 assists in the first half, the young Englishman made a strong case for respect.
No one could have seen Kyle Walker-Peter’s performance against Bournemouth coming. This was especially the case because he had only played a total of 12 minutes in the Premier League this season.
The fullback had not really impressed so far this year. One could wince when thinking about his frankly atrocious decision-making against Barcelona in a critical Champions League match. This was when he was paralyzed with the ball and had it stolen by Ousmane Dembele who put Barcelona in the lead early on in the match.
This mistake seemed like a distant memory on Wednesday. Walker-Peter’s performance is still drawing praise from Tottenham supporters and fans of the game alike.
The 21 year-old put on an offensive and defensive masterclass against Bournemouth. As you obviously know by now, he contributed 3 assists in the first half- all to different players. This shows an incredible vision for a player with so little experience.
In his first assist, he was one-on-one with a Bournemouth defender at the right side of the box. He then cooly passed it to Christian Eriksen whose deflected shot from outside the box found its way to the back of the net.
In his second assist, he first stole the ball from Charlie Daniels who couldn’t figure out what to do with it. Instead of looking for the shot, Walker-Peters laid it off to Heung-Min Son who also made a goal from outside of the box. This play showed both the young man’s defensive and attacking prowess.
His last assist showed his skill in looking for the best possible pass. He was played into the right side of the box and let the ball take a bounce before passing it. KWP could have chosen to give it to the charging Harry Kane but the striker was being smothered by 2 Bournemouth defenders. Since it seemed like the entire Cherry defense was ready for Kane to get the ball, no one was keeping an eye on Lucas Moura. KWP made a controlled ground pass that met Moura and this led to an easier, simpler shot.
Walker-Peters even could have gotten a goal of his own. Kane lofted a sublime pass to him in the box and KWP made a perfectly-timed onside run. It was just him and the keeper and if he got a better touch on it Tottenham would have extended their lead.
This is a welcome sight to all Tottenham fans as one of their club’s weaker positions is fullback. With injuries being racked up, Kyle Walker-Peters also adds a much-needed depth to the lineup.
His eye for the best pass and diligent work on the defensive side of the ball spell bright things for his future.
