Tottenham could be built of the right stuff this season

Tottenham could very well be built for something historic this season despite their loss in the North London derby.

Now you’ll have to allow me the pleasure of philosophizing on this issue even just a little bit.  But it seems that there’s a chance Tottenham are in exactly the sort of dark-horse position that teams come from to win a trophy every now and again. Of course, the skeptics will say but it’s Tottenham and in all fairness, Spurs have earned that over the past 30 years or so but this could be different.
This is not your Dad or your Granddad’s Spurs. This team could be mightily different and they are showing it in recent months.  Where Spurs used to possess quality in a few areas and were always a joy to watch going forward now they’re better.  They two of the top-10 central defenders in Europe as well as the third or fourth best goalkeeper in the league.  Their manager is a talented and smart chap who has instilled not only a previously lacking sense of discipline but a belief in the team as well.
All the proof you need of that is the recent gutted out wins against Inter and Chelsea.  Italian teams if not always the most thrilling possess intelligence by and large.  Particularly across the top of the division the teams are well drilled, intelligent and organized.  Some, of course, possess more attacking talent than others but try and think of the last time you read a European paper that suggested the Italian’s put out an unorganized mess to face teams from another league.  It has never happened.
Chelsea on the other hand though in yet another of their seemingly endless rebuilds possess an unbelievable array of international talent.  Eden Hazard is the third best player in the world when he doesn’t feel like ceding it to Neymar.  Then almost every other player in the squad is a full international starter.  Not simply a man who travels with the squad but a starter.  They then are coached by one of the best-attacking coaches in Europe
Tottenham found entirely different ways to beat both of these sides.  They put in professional and composed performances that displayed entirely different characteristics.  The Chelsea win was all guts and thunder.  The old glass jawed Tottenham sides of the early 2000s will have been embarrassed watching Spurs push around a Chelsea side that though miles away from their power football best still possess a fair bit of bite.  Meanwhile, the Inter match was a slow burning chess match where Tottenham managed to conserve the energy in their legs and yet still control the match and win.
Teams with this sort of character often go unheralded during the majority of the season and yet when the money moments matter towards the end are the sides who are able to push through.  Liverpool wasn’t wonderful last year and almost won a Champions League.  Porto did win a Champions League on the back of such character.  There are still plenty of options for Spurs to find something they can win if they keep playing the way that they have been.
