Nick Pope would be brilliant but Tottenham move still unnecessary

In light of Hugo Lloris’ recent failures as Tottenham’s first choice goalkeeper, the North London club has been connected with Burnley’s Nick Pope.

Hugo Lloris has struggled recently.  Both on and off the field and there’s really no denying that.  The Tottenham captain and double centurion is a fantastic footballer who has gone through it and back for the club and that’s exactly why they can’t replace him.  On his day Lloris is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and sure at the moment he’s struggling but a player of his stature cannot simply be dropped by the club in the manner that replacing him with Nick Pope would be.

That’s not to disparage Pope at all.  I personally am a fan of Nick Pope and think the world of him.  Even simply in terms of what he means to football.  Stories like his are inspiring and exactly the sort of reason that children play football.  Statistically last year he was one of the best goalkeepers in world football.

The choice though to replace Lloris is about more than that though.  Everyone at Spurs has struggled at one point or another.  The club hasn’t had a home stadium and even players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli have had their weak moments.  What a club does though in moments like this though defines them.  Lloris isn’t simply replaceable he’s the captain of the side and a World Cup winner.  He’s one of the best players in the history of the club and he’s still in his prime.

To simply replace him because of a bad early season would be entirely unforgivable.

It would suggest an attitude that doesn’t befit the great strides forward that the club has made in recent years.  It would be small-minded and ignorant of the bigger picture.  Tottenham owe it to Lloris, the same as they owe it to all those who serve the club and risk broken limbs and all other bodily harms in order to entertain and richen those in charge of the club, some time to set things right.  Lloris owes the club the same mind you.  He must get his head down and put his poor form and arrest behind him.

Anybody can recover in life from whatever they’ve done so long as they show a true interest in and Hugo Lloris will do the same.  Tottenham would be far better served helping him do that rather than cutting down a club legend at the knees and replacing him…for now.
