Having thrown away their match with Inter and in the midst of an injury crisis, Tottenham are in a bad way coming into their match against Barcelona.

Dele Alli, Dembele, Eriksen, Aurier and Vertonghen.

An Englishman, an Ivorian, a Dane and a couple of Belgians. Attacking midfielders, a central midfield destroyer and a defender.  What do they all have in common?  Yes, they are all phenomenal players of great influence and yes, those quick few of you, they are also all injured.

It’s not a good position for a club to be in for a single football match let alone a match against Lionel Messi and his Barcelona.  The Catalonians though are not in a good way themselves and that is something that Tottenham can take a note of positivity from.  Gerard Pique is looking more and more frail with every game that he plays and the rest of the defence just as poor.  For a goalkeeper who was so firmly displaying the beauties of German goalkeeping heritage last season Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has been terrible this season so far.

Lionel Messi has been phenomenal though and that is nothing new.  His disgusting omission from the World’s Best will not be gone on any further than this sentence in this article but should be noted. His goalscoring prowess has slowed from his younger days but it has always been Messi’s vision and ability to act on it with either foot that separates Messi from other more purely carnivorous players.

Tottenham will have to slug this one out.  There are no two ways about it.  They as always have the battered and bruised and fantastic Harry Kane to lead the way and he will have to.  There’s no negotiating that.  If the Lillywhite’s are going to get anything from this match, and they must, then Harry will need to deliver.  Too much is asked of him but he will have to answer.

The good news though does continue in the fact that Lucas Moura, who has been the best Tottenham player this season, will start.  So will Son.

More from Champions League

Truly the beauty of the scenario is simple for Tottenham.  Their backs are up against the wall here and there’s nothing they can do to change that.  They injured, beaten and broken at the moment.  They must play out of their skins.  With bravery and abandon and then and only then can they get that thing that they need from this match. A WIN.

Tottenham should aim to punch above what is expected from them in this.  Win. The supporters will be behind them and they’ll be at Wembley.  Make a show of it.  Be bold. Fortune favors those who are.
